A state license is necessary to be allowed by the government to practice in the state. Students who are pursuing a postgraduate program may need to be certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association. They need to obtain a minimum score of six hundred to obtain fellowship and a certificate from a professional.

The United states have different requirements for all fifty states and the qualifications needed will be different in every state. There are some professional programs that offer a masters degree in the field. General requirements include passing a national exam given by the Praxis Series of Educational testing.
