Using A Drinking Water Test Kit Will Keep Your Family Safe

By Leticia Jensen

Most of us rely on the water that is piped through to our homes. In fact we take you through granted that it will always be there, and always be pure enough for us to use when cooking, and in our drinks. It plays a very important part in everything that we do.

However, it's possible that it can become contaminated. When this happens people can become extremely sick, something we do not want to happen to our family members. The problem is, what can we do to be confident that what we are drinking is safe. These days it is possible to buy drinking water test kit to use at home.

Most people get their supply from the local utility company, and expect that they test it before it is distributed to the local area. However, once it has left them on the way to your home it has to go through miles of pipes before you can use it. Some of these pipes are very old, and even though they are the responsibility of your supplier they could still be poorly maintained. Any pipework that is on your property is your responsibility.

If any part of the system that it passes through has not been well maintained there is a good possibility that corrosion has set in. Pollutants such as agricultural fertiliser, harmful chemicals, and lead could easily have got into the supply. All of these can be tested for impurities to make sure that your family is kept safe.

Some people find it hard to believe that it can cause a whole host of diseases, some fatal, to a family. These can include such things as legionnaires disease, lead poisoning, and heart problems. It only takes a small investment on your part to have a means of testing your own personal water supply.

Now you will find it simpler to test for contamination than it was in the past. Until these kits were devised you would have to send samples to your local laboratory for testing. This process could take time, and also be very expensive. After you have tested the water yourself, you may feel that you need a second opinion from an independent laboratory, but they are no longer the first port of call.

It is very difficult to judge whether there is anything wrong just by the taste or smell of the liquid, as a lot of these bacteria do not offer any clues. However, the results you get from doing these tests will not mean anything unless you have an understanding of what they mean. What could be harmless readings could get you are extremely worried. It is very rare that the water will be totally pure, but it is the level of the bacteria that is present that has to be noted.

If you are in any doubt about the results you get from these tests, you should seek specialist advice. It is very important that you are especially vigilant if there are small children, or anybody is pregnant, within the household. Do not worry what people think about you if you do ask for further tests, as these people would do exactly the same themselves in order to protect their loved ones.
