The Increasing Botox Trend

By Ariel Mernal

The public is well aware that having botox treatments is a simple and easy solution to make the skin appear younger. Its cosmetic applications have advanced significantly over the last few years, with more and more people now looking to undergo botox injections with the hope of getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. There was a time when people may have thought that botox was a trend that would disappear, but people now realize that it is not going anywhere.

There are sections in newspapers and magazines and segments on television that are dedicated to celebrities that have had botox in order to make their skin look more youthful. A lot of people are wondering why this has become so increasingly mainstream in recent years.

There is a very basic reason for this. Ageing skin is a big problem, and people know that botox is inexpensive and effective. Unlike plastic surgery, there are no scars after the procedure, it's low-cost, and it takes only a few minutes to have done. More and more people have realized this now, thanks to all the publicity botox treatments receive through celebrity use.

What about Botox for Men?

Many people think that botox is only something that women are interested in, but this is not true. The truth is to the contrary. Women are still more likely to get botox than men, but it is becoming more widely accepted for men to receive the treatments as well. Some newspaper reports have even gone to the extent of calling it 'bro-tox'! In some areas, men are accounting for about half of the botox injections that they administer.

Trends are changing

Botox is becoming more popular all the time. In one year, 2010 to 2011, it went up from 5.4 million, to 5.7 million botox patients, so it went up 5% in that year alone. Other statistics say that it's 10% that it has been going up, year by year. Most people see these numbers and are not surprised by them. The previously attached 'stigma' and social attitude to botox injections being the treatment reserved for the wealthy no longer exists, and neither does any sense of any shame of undergoing the procedure. This procedure has become quite mainstream and popular.

But that's not all. Botox's applications have advanced from just cosmetic use to management of a variety of clinical conditions that cause muscle spasticity. Children and adults who suffer from cerebral palsy have had botox help them, as well as those who have blepharospasm and also conditions such as spastic paraparesis. Results have been promising and outcomes have been excellent. Other applications include managing patients with migraine (multiple botox injections are given to the scalp) and excessive sweating.

There is no doubt that the future is bright for botox. Research is ongoing into looking at newer applications, and the results so far are promising.
