Dentists Performing Botox Injections

By Erin O'breen

There are different reasons that people may wish to have Botox injections administered by a trained professional, sometimes it's for medical issues, and other times it's simply to enhance the appearance of the patient. There are rather stringent guidelines on who should be allowed to inject botox injection, with the overall suggestion being that a trained doctor should be performing them. Injections may also be delivered by other certified medical professionals like nurses, when a doctor is supervising.

Inquiries have been made as of late about botox injections that are prescribed and delivered by a dentist. State laws are part of what determines the answer to these questions, among other things.

Let's take a look at this a bit further.

Which are the points in question?

All medical professionals who administer botox treatments must receive the specialized training, including dentists. For these treatments to be administered, it takes someone who knows precisely how the body works, who has had significant medical training, it's not a difficult procedure, but it takes professional skill. Side effects can occur and the treating professional needs to be aware of them and capable of handling them.

Basically, when the necessary training is completed a dentist should be approved for botox injection treatments and of course, prescribing the treatments. .

Dentists performing botox treatments

The prescription and administration of botox treatments are allowed by dentists in the majority of the United States. There is a difference between standard injections for cosmetic reasons, and the way botox is administered. For example, the Dental Board of California allows dentists to inject botox to diagnose and treat myofascial conditions that form a part of a dental treatment plan. A dentist can not legally administer botox treatments for conditions that are of the cosmetic variety. Administering it for this reason involves the Facial Cosmetic Surgery Permit to approve of the procedure. Within the state of Georgia, dentists need to take a 21 hour board approved course that details out facial anatomy and the exact techniques of using botox and the available market forms of it.

More recently, the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry approved dentists who have had practical training in cosmetic injection treatments to administer botox and fillers for cosmetic purposes.

Since states have their own separate rules on this subject, patients should do their own research into whether their dentist is permitted to administer these treatments. From observable data as of late, it looks like it's moving toward dentists being approved for cosmetic administration of botox treatments.

The debate

Some debate is happening presently for and against dentists being approved to cosmetically treat patients using botox injections. Discussions on a number of medical forums have constantly stated that they should be performed by trained plastic surgeons that have a better understanding of facial anatomy than dentists do. This concurs with some of the state board's guidance of dentists only using botox for dental related procedures.

Dentists, on the other hand, have a different opinion, they say that their understanding of maxillofacial and facial anatomy is highly advanced, making them qualified to administer botox, as much or more so than some doctors. It would appear that this argument will continue on for years to come.

Summary

The number of patients requesting botox treatments seems to be surpassing the ability of medical professionals to deliver them, due to rising demand. With ever changing policies, state boards are now approving dentists to treat patients who would like to have botox treatments performed.

  1. It is better and much safer if Botox London treatment is given by the expert and professional doctors who are trained and certified for administering the treatment. even if the dentists have the required training and certification it is good.
