What Any Vision Tester Tests

By Molly Morse

A vision tester is a piece of equipment used for testing various properties of sight in human beings. The device screens for various abnormalities in sight and is very important for little kids. The device can be used to identify eye conditions and sight impairments that may later on lead to loss of vision or more dangerous conditions. There are different models of the device and all work differently.

Most eye conditions are easy to correct at a tender age than in maturity. This does not however mean that adults cannot have their eye sight screened for impairments. In fact, it is a basic requirement in certain careers that before a person is hired, there eye sight must be analyzed for suitability. Such careers include the army, security personnel, personal and public drivers, doctors, and pilots among others.

Vision testing machines are capable of conducting all the tests and provide back feedback within a short time. The equipment is quick, precise, reliable, and a bit costly. The higher price of the machines renders services a little expensive also. The reliability and accuracy of the outcomes renders the higher service cost worthwhile.

The testing activity is easy and short rendering it possible to be carried out at the work place of a doctor. The status of an eye is indicated in a short period after tests are conducted. Little kids who are incapable of focusing are at an advantage since this device does not consume much time. There are several generations of eye screening devices and the latest makes have more powerful properties than the former ones.

There are several tests that this device can be used to accomplish. Some of the tests include color vision test, refraction, and visual acuity. Visual acuity tests are utilized to gauge the capability of eyes to see details at far and near distances. Visual acuity is the most commonly done eye test. Each eye is tested separately although some equipment permit testing of both eyes concurrently.

Refraction tests target at establishing refractive errors in eyes. They are done after visual acuity tests. Farsightedness and/or nearsightedness occur when eyes are not able to concentrate light from items on the retina properly. This results in blurred sight. These tests need to be carried out as a routine for those individuals who already use glasses and/or contact lenses. They could also be done in case the outcomes from visual acuity tests indicate that eyesight is below ordinary levels.

Visual field tests target at establishing presence of gaps within the peripheral vision. The examination needs one to focus their eyesight in a certain direction and state what they can see at the sides. Color test determines the capability of human eye to distinguish between different color shades.

A vision tester is able to be operated through a PC or a remote control. Remote controlled models are small in size and portable making them suitable for use in field applications. User guides or manuals that come with them explain fully the usage of the appliance making it possible to use it even without prior knowledge or experience.
