Be Ready for your Botox Procedure

By Craig W. Nevilt

It may have taken you some time and research to come to the conclusion that Botox was the right choice for you. Once you've gotten there, it's important to make sure you are as prepared as possible to benefit the most from your procedure. Since the treatments are relatively quick and uncomplicated, the best way to prepare for Botox is to inform yourself on what the procedure entails. Knowing what to expect is the best way to insure your comfort and success as you prepare to use Botox to eliminate unsightly wrinkles or for one of its many other uses.

The day of the procedure is very straightforward, and the best way to prepare is solely to know what to expect. When you are with your doctor, you will be asked to sit in a reclining, dentist-like chair. Knowing what you are trying to accomplish, the person administering your Botox treatment will likely ask you to contract specific muscles, then he or she will mark the injection locations.

Right After the Treatment

As soon as the Botox injections are administered, you'll likely have some red dots showing in the area of treatment. In rare cases, some patients reported instances of minor bruising or swelling. However, any discoloration can easily be disguised with a bit of make-up and will fade within a few hours of the procedure. Scars on the face are not a concern, since this is not an invasive procedure. A cold washcloth or some ice pressed on the injection site for a few minutes after the procedure will reduce any inflammation.

After the injections have been completed, your doctor should provide you with Botox recovery instructions. The Botox will take effect within the first few hours with full results visible within about a week. So keep this in mind when you are scheduling your appointment around an event.

What Will it Cost You?

BOTOX Cosmetic treatments are generally quite affordable, which is one of the main reasons for the procedure's international popularity. A BOTOX session will usually cost between $300 and $400 per syringe. Of course, this really depends on the specific treatment you'll receive. Compared to other anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, Botox is the most affordable. To maintain results, BOTOX patients will have to pay somewhere in that general range every 4-6 months.

Side Effects of Botox

Though very rare, Botox side effects do occur. Usually, they're temporary, but they can sometimes last for several months. The kinds of side effects depend on what area you had treated with Botox. For patients with frown lines, the most common Botox related side effects include:

▪ headache

▪ respiratory infection

▪ flu-like symptoms
